Jonathan Visits Troubled Maiduguri Amidst Tight Security!

For the first time since he won the Presidential elections in April 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan paid a visit to Borno and Yobe States. The President landed in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Thursday and flew to Damaturu, Yobe State by helicopter around noon.

Security had been tightened in the two states ahead of the visit, especially as the axis is known to be the stronghold of the militant Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram. The sect had unleashed terror in the two states as series of bombings and rifle attacks have been carried out by the sect with many lives lost. Soldiers manned the roads while movement was generally restricted. In Maiduguri, there were no commercial vehicles on the roads while only a few private vehicles were seen moving.

In Yobe State, the President commissioned the state university and several other projects executed by the administration of Governor Ibrahim Geidam.

The President will continue his visit to Maiduguri on Friday. Eight Governors from the newly formed opposition party, All Progressives Alliance visited Maiduguri a few days ago, a move the Presidency has described as an attempt to score cheap political points.
